Miguel Mancillas is the Artistic Director of Antares, one of the most outstanding modern dance companies in Mexico. He is a dancer and a choreographer
born in Hermosillo, in the Mexican State of Sonora. His professional education was in Mexico City, with teachers from a variety of both classical and
contemporary
dance styles. Notable teachers include: Xavier Francis, Isabel Hernández, Ángeles Martínez and Guillermo Maldonado. In addition to his
professional
career as a performer and a teacher of contemporary dance, he has been devoted to the investigation of Mexican folklore. His reputation grew as he performed as Guest Artist with dance companies in Mexico, the USA, and Canada. He has received awards for performance, for choreography, for costume design, and scene design. The National Dance Festival held in San Luis Potosi acknowledged him as Outstanding Dancer on two different occasions. Mancillas received a grant by the National Foundation for Culture and Arts in 1993 and 1994. In 1997, he was honored with awards in four categories at the XVIII National Institute of Fine Arts - Autonomous University of Mexico: Choreography, Best Male Performer, Best Costume Design, and Best Usage of Scenic Resources. Also in 1997, Mancillas received the Continental Award for Contemporary Dancing. In 1999, he received the SOMEC - VITARS Award for En espera . . ANTARES Antares is the name of a star….The Antares modern dance company has taken this name as one of the most outstanding modern dance companies in Mexico. Antares belongs to the dance/theater movement that incorporates drama, humor and music in their performances and a reflection of life in Latin America today. The company has been based in Hermosillo, MX where most of its members were born. Antares has toured nationally and internationally. National festival invitations have included the lmágenes Móviles (Moving Images) and Diez Años, Diez Coreógrafos (Ten Years, Ten Choreographers). The group has been in residence in several colleges and universities in the USA and has enjoyed an ongoing exchange with the Dance Center of Columbia College in Chicago, Ill. since 1992. |
