Films are part of a cultural and artistic life that we generally take for granted. Through particular aesthetic forms, film has develop an audio-visual "language" that allows it to communicate to people both as entertainment and as a powerful social commentary and critique. For decades now, Latino American filmmakers have struggled to produce and distribute their unique productions.

The recently awarded Oscars to directors and actors such as Pedro Almodóvar and Selma Hayek have increased the interest on Hispanic films. However, many films of great artistic and social merit typically lack the distribution and marketing, and the international public does not get to see them.

The Spanish and Latin American Studies Department in conjuction with the International Student Services' KinoMondo International Film Series wants to bring to light some of these films as part of the 2004 Latin American Arts Festival, and would like to open a forum to stress the aesthetics of the contemporary Latin American film production.
